Festival History
Over the last 33 years, the Lindauer Queenstown Winter Festival has developed into an icon on New Zealand’s special event calendar. It is one of the largest winter festivals in the world and in recent years has become known as “The Southern Hemisphere’s Ultimate Winter Party”.Queenstown’s first ever winter festival was staged way back in 1975.
Not that you’d ever guess it today, but Queenstown hasn’t always been the mecca for winter sports that it is now. And in the 70’s the festival was all about trying to get local Queenstowners out from under their duvets in what was traditionally a pretty quiet time of year.
The annual knees up, with a few wacky events thrown in for good measure, soon grew, not only in scale, but also in reputation and it wasn’t long before festival not only became the highlight of Queenstown’s social calendar, but many people from around the region started to make their way here specifically to be a part of the action.
Now the festival not only announces the arrival of winter, but it has become a true celebration of Queenstown, our community and all the things that make our beautiful mountain home so unique.
And the best thing is that because Queenstowners are such a diverse, creative and social bunch, when we throw a party we make sure we jam pack it full of great events with something for everyone. So not only are you assured that there is going to be something for you, but you can also be assured that we’d love to see you here.
